How Jason got his Robin suit

Initially, the post-Crisis origin of Jason Todd had him train for about six months prior to being presented with his Robin attire.

However, a recent retcon in Nightwing: Year One, by Chuck Dixon and Scott McDaniel, showed Jason “stealing” the suit, which has become a more recent tradition with another Robin.

It’s another unfortunate retcon that serves to paint Jason as simply a bad kid from the start.

This page, from Batman #410, shows Batman giving Jason the costume.

However, in Nightwing Year One (2005), Jason takes the Robin suit from a case without permission.

In a similar vein, Damian Wayne, in the trade paperback Batman and Son (2006) by Grant Morrison, steals Jason’s Robin tunic that is hanging in his memorial case and nearly kills Tim Drake as he vows to take his rightful place by his biological father’s side. He leaves Tim lying on the ground with the shorts from Jason’s Robin suit. True story.

However, in Batman #683, written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Tony Daniel, Jason is shown as having been given the choice to become Robin. And it’s a choice he wants to honour.

Great little bits of detail on Jason’s fingerless gloves and the black vest and red shirt, which is a callback to his appearance in Batman #408. For more on how Jason acquired the Robin suit, check out this post via Scans Daily.
