“A Death in the Family” is a story arc first published in Batman #426-429, published in 1988-1989 which amazingly gave fans the ability to influence the story through voting with a 900 number. The story behind this tale is that DC Comics and Batman editor Dennis O’Neil were already aware that Jason Todd had become unpopular with readers and decided to remove him from the Robin role. The question was how to do that. Seeking a new way to interact with fans, the company set up two 1-900 number 50-cent hotlines giving callers the ability to vote for or against Jason’s death. The call-in period started after publication of the issue in which Jason and his mother are trapped in the warehouse. Over 10,000 votes were cast, with the final vote being 5,343 votes for Jason to die over 5,271 for him to live. DC published A Death in the Family to massive media attention, some of it critical…. with some uncertainty to the question of whether the poll was an accurate measure of what fans wanted to happen to Jason Todd. Rather than being manipulated by some loon with an auto-dialler and more dollars than sence.
I am selling my copies from here in Tasmania, Australia so please contact me if your interested at maydena@live.com or tweet me @Mooopah

The Robins – A New Comic From Jeff Lemire?

He’s done gangbusters for DC Comics, taking C-list character Animal Man, whose return to the DC Universe from DC Vertigo had been lacklustre at best, and turned him into a surprise critical and commercial hit as part of the DC New 52.

So it’s only natural that DC might tap him for any other bright ideas.

I understand, from a well placed source, that the current tittle tattle around the Batbooks is that Jeff Lemire will write a new series entitled The Robins, starring Damien, Jason, Tim and Dick.

Batman And Robin has recently specialised in featuring as many Robins as it can – but The Robins will do all that but with a lot less Batman.

No mention of Stephanie Brown as of yet. Neither Jeff Lemire nor DC Comics returned emails sent yeaterday.

FYJT: Interesting! Thanks for the submission and we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more! And let’s hope there’s some Steph in this too, amirite? #girlrobinscounttoo
