Red Hood and the Outlaws make it into the Top 40
According to September’s sales figures, Red Hood and the Outlaws made it to #39 on the sales chart, and sold more than 50,000 books — double the average sales on Red Hood: The Lost Days.
Here’s how the Batbooks rank:
1. Batman - 188,420 (This number is important, since throughout the summer, few comics even broke the 100,000 mark)
6. Detective Comics - 103,392
7. Batman: The Dark Knight - 98,389
10. Batman and Robin - 85,242
12. Batgirl - 81,489
15. Teen Titans - 73,675
17. Batwoman - 72,228
21. Nightwing - 62,717
33. Catwoman - 53,670
39. Red Hood and the Outlaws - 50,501
40. Birds of Prey - 50,466
58. Batwing - 41,382
Bad News
According to this poll, Jason will sell pretty poorly, as will most of the new titles. Though this is only the CBR people who voted, it doesn’t bode well for Jay. Thoughts?
FYJT: The poll is also based on CBR readers, and does not necessarily make up or reflect the entire demographic of comic readers. Not all comic readers are frequenting message boards; additionally, many female and otherwise marginalized readers don’t go to the CBR message boards as they feel these are not safe spaces for them. As a comparison, Scans Daily and Tumblr have more women and LGBTQ readers who discuss comics as they feel that these are safer spaces.
This has to do with Jason because the character has a significant female fanbase, something that is not only evidenced on Tumblr and Scans Daily (which are much more prominently female, minority and/or LGBTQ friendly), but also even the writer Judd Winick has taken notice of the readers who make up Jason’s fan base.
Additionally, these are the sales numbers on Red Hood: Lost Days. It sold close to Red Robin and just above Batgirl’s sales for the majority of the mini-series’ run.
But we hope our followers (nearly 1,500!) can hope spread the word about Red Hood and the Outlaws and bring in more new readers to the title!
Lost Days was selling over 20000 copies per issue, if I’m correct. (FYJT knows exactly). Is that enough for an ongoing?
Sales for Red Hood: Lost Days were as follows:
- #1 June 34,197 (About 1,000-plus units shy of Red Robin’s sales)
- #2 July 26,560
- #3 August 24,701
- #4 September 24,104
- #5 October 22,967
- #6 November 22,123

Want some pre or post-Crisis Jason origin comics? Only $275!
Every so often, I check out the prices of the origin stories of Jason Todd both pre- and post-Crisis, just to see whether they’ve gone up in price and what they’re currently valued at.
The very first appearance of Jason, in Batman #357, is now available on eBay for a mere $275.

Not saying a word about the tentacles…
Batman #366 is the first appearance of Jason in a Robin costume. That’s available for $99.99.

And Batman #368, the issue to feature Jason as Robin on the cover is available for $199.95.

Batman #408, Jason’s first post-Crisis appearance and new origin story is available for $89.99.
The price some of these comics, particularly of Batman #357, seem to have shot up almost overnight. But more likely, it’s a combination of the comic being a rarer item; the animated movie having come out, thus thrusting the character more into the mainstream; and the character becoming much more popular.
You can, if you’re lucky and if you scour hard enough, get some of these for much cheaper.

July Bat-title Comic Sales: Red Hood Lost Days
This is available here. June sales are in parenthesis. Red Hood: Lost Days #2 had a disappointing drop in sales, however, that could be due to the fact that #1 was somewhat of a re-hash of Batman Annual 25. However, the series continues to be well-reviewed and has got great character development and art. We highly recommend picking it up if you haven’t yet!!
