Friday Femmes

Jason has had a lot of mothers and maternal figures in his life. In his two lives, actually, if we look at his pre-Crisis incarnation. Today, as we continue on in our Friday Femmes posts, we are looking at Natalia Knight, alias Nocturna.

In Jason’s pre-Crisis origin, his parents, Joseph and Trina Todd were killed by Killer Croc. Natalia Knight, who desperately wanted a child of her own, fell in love with Jason and waged a custody battle against Bruce Wayne for him and won. Jason agreed to go and live with her because he thought it would be a great opportunity to catch Natalia in her Nocturna persona stealing. Except that Jason didn’t realise that he too would begin to see Natalia as a mother and love her back, enough to decide against turning her in to the police.

Nocturna and Jason work together to take down Anton Knight, the imposter Batman.

To learn more about Nocturna, follow under the cut!

Friday Femmes

Fans of Jason Todd are often quick to point out his particular consideration and respect for women as one of his best features.  But who are the important women in his life, and what roles do they occupy? fuckyeahjasontodd is running a series of bi-weekly articles dedicated to the fascinating women of Jason’s world.  Continuing on from Talia’s article, this week we look at Scarlet.

Scarlet: Sidekick

“The only one you seem to give a rat’s ass about.  I think you call her Scarlet.”

Introducing Friday Femmes

Fans of Jason Todd are often quick to point out his particular consideration and respect for women as one of his best features.  But who are the important women in his life, and what roles do they occupy? fuckyeahjasontodd is beginning a series of bi-weekly articles dedicated to the fascinating women of Jason’s world.  Inspired by this post, the series will (hopefully) continue indefinitely until we run out of ladies.  Suggestions are welcome!

Talia Al Ghul: Mentor/friend

Arguably the most important woman currently in Jason’s life, Talia is responsible for healing Jason in the Lazarus pit and bringing him back to full awareness of the world.

About Catherine Ann Todd: Jason’s adoptive mother v.2.0

Catherine Todd was Jason’s adoptive mother. She was married to Willis Todd. We know very little about her, other than she was a drug addict

In Batman 408, Bruce asks Jason how long his mother was sick. Jason replies,

Over a year —- I found her food and stuff — kept her warm and alive long as I could.

In Batman 409, Bruce investigates the Todd family and states that Catherine was a drug addict and that she “may have died of an overdose in the past six months.” The researcher helping him confirms his suspicions that Catherine died of an overdose in February of that year.

In A Death in the Family, writer Jim Starlin writes an, um interesting narration about Catherine, saying that her “life was cut short by a disease that just didn’t care how much love she had in her heart.”  (It’s unclear whether that was a retcon, a lack of knowledge on the writer’s part about the actual reason for her death, or just written as if it were almost one of those newspaper obits that cover up the actual reason for death)

What’s clear, however, is that Jason loved her very much.
